Combine Culture And Rustic Relaxation Cruising The Greek Islands

The island of Naxos is growing in popularity as a destination when cruising the Greek islands, but fortunately still retains much of its natural charm. The coast is adorned with beautiful beaches whilst the interior is richly endowed with lush vegetation, making it a perfect nature lover’s paradise.
Naxos is famous for its wine production, so it’s no surprise there are numerous delightful vineyards scattered across the landscape. Visit a winery to taste some local produce or simply wander among the many verdant valleys and fruit orchards. The beaches here are stunning, with long stretches of golden sand just waiting to be discovered. Plaka, Agia Anna and Agia Prokopis are all lovely. Agia Georgios is the most popular with visitors, offering not just a great beach but a good selection of bars and restaurants too. There are many watersports to enjoy here and it’s a good location for windsurfing thanks to the north and north eastern winds.
Naxos also offers its visitors plenty of cultural delights. The island has been populated for over five thousand years, so there are remnants from many civilisations to see. Venetian, Byzantine and Mycenae ruins can all be found here, with buildings ranging from temples to churches and even castles. The residents of Naxos are rightly proud of their heritage and there are still many villages where traditional dress is worn and occupations such as fishing and weaving are the main sources of income. If you are cruising the Greek islands on holiday, Naxos gives a unique insight into the perfect Cycladic idyll.
