Game of Thrones is quite simply one of the biggest television adaptations of a book in recent years, garnering fans from around the globe. The intricate plotlines and vivacious characters are part of its appeal, with the dramatic landscapes also playing a key role. When you yacht in Croatia, you can take advantage of a unique opportunity to visit some of the locations where this epic series is filmed.
The medieval city of Dubrovnik is the perfect setting for the king’s landing of the Iron Throne, and as you walk along the city walls it is easy to imagine yourself transported to George RR Martin’s fantastical realm.
Across the bay lies Lovrijenac Fort, which was transformed into the infamous Red Fort, and you may recognise the stunning nearby island of Lokrum as the location where some of the Qarth scenes were filmed.
There are many places around this beautiful city that have appeared in the programme, with Dubrovnik organising tours to capitalise on public interest.
The city of Split is the location for some of the most exciting scenes in the latest series. Much of the plot centres on epic battles, some of which were filmed in Klis Fortress and a quarry in nearby Zrnovnica. To really capture the essence of the story, however, some key scenes were filmed in the famous Diocletian’s Palace. The ancient walls of this Roman palace are today home to a plethora of shops and restaurants but have retained much of their original character; in particular, the cellars are a popular tourist attraction and make their debut in series 4.
Whether you prefer the books or the television programme, visiting some of the famous filming locations in Croatia will really give you a sense of how these epic tales have been brought to the small screen.
