Of all the islands in the Adriatic, Mljet is sure to rank highly as one of the standout destinations for Croatia boat holidays. Verdant, lush and green, this impossibly unspoilt island is home to the famous Mljet Nature Reserve and is definitely an island not to be missed.
Visitors to the island can enjoy a number of leisure pursuits. You can walk to one of the charming villages or wander among the many vineyards that produce some excellent local wines; alternatively, take a trip to Polace, where there are a number of interesting architectural remains to explore. In addition to the ruins of a Roman palace, there are various ancient relics from a fortification, basilica and church.
The thing that makes Mljet so wonderfully idyllic is that much of the island has been preserved as a nature park. This unspoilt landscape is richly adorned with dense forests, lovely hiking trails and stunning lakes. Cars are not permitted in order to protect the countryside, but you can hire bikes to help you get around. Enjoy the various flora and fauna that can be found around Malo Jezero, also known as Small Lake, and Veliko Jezero, the Big Lake. In the centre of Veliko Jezero is a small island, accessible by boat, which is home to a fascinating Benedictine monastery.
A truly unspoilt small piece of heaven, Mljet is one of Croatia’s real gems.
